Pharmacy Voice concerned over delay in market entry consultation

Pharmacy Voice has reacted with concern at the news that the Department of Health is to delay its consultation on implementing new proposals for market entry in England based on Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments.

Ian Facer, chairman of Pharmacy Voice said:

“Any system of market entry must balance healthy competition with the need for existing contractors to have sufficient confidence to invest in their premises, staff and services.”

The delay to the consultation on PNAs introduces a degree of uncertainty that is wholly unwelcome”.

The Department of Health has issued the following statement:

"We are considering carefully the question of whether, and when, we should move to a system of NHS market entry aligned to local assessments of pharmaceutical need.

There are a number of inter-related developments, not least of which is the outcome of the pharmacy Cost of Service Inquiry, which is nearing completion. We need to take these fully into account. We therefore expect to reach a decision on these new provisions once we have considered all relevant factors."
